The innovation that makes it possible for one basic length scope to a number of rifles, is Leatherwood's replaceable sunshade objective assembly. Besides allowing you to adjust the overall length of the scope, it does three other things. One: it protects the objective lens from blackpowder fouling (most old original scopes had the objective set back in the tube for this reason). Two: it acts as a sunshade to prevent glare on the front lens and Three: it allows you to use a larger objective lens that normally would be possible.
